Best Places to Take Your RZR Rental

Ophir Pass

Ophir Pass is an excellent choice for first-timers, without many technical sections. It is also an incredible trail to choose in the fall, when the aspens are changing color. The first few miles are easy, with a slightly more difficult climb to the 11,814-foot summit. The top of the pass may have snow year-round, so you and your family might have get to have a summer snowball fight! Crystal Lake is also near the summit, if you want to do a little more exploring. A popular option is also to loop this trail with the more challenging Imogene Pass.

Old Lime Creek Road

This trail is not far from Durango and rated easy. You can find the trailhead to Potato Lake for a great picnic spot or watch kayakers on the river attempt the Class V rapids. If you hike a few miles, you might even witness locals jumping from the top of Adrenaline Falls!

Kennebec Pass

You can’t beat the accessibility of this route: the Colorado Trail starts right in town and takes you into the Durango backcountry. The road explores pine and aspen forests and even passes a 100-foot waterfall! This is a good option for beginners, although there are a few technical sections and creek crossings. Be mindful of your own experience level and have a great time!

La Plata Canyon

This rocky route passes old mines, abandoned buildings, and, if you time it right, fields of wildflowers. La Plata Canyon also offers great access to trails and campsites if you want to make a basecamp for further off-road exploration. Beginners don’t have to worry about anything too technical, but there are some steep climbs.

Imogene Pass

More experienced off-roaders may want the challenge of climbing to the highest pass in the San Juan mountains. At over 13,000 feet in elevation, Imogene Pass may literally take your breath away. These roads can be narrow with steep drop-offs, and stream crossings should be approached with caution after heavy rain. The spectacular scenery is absolutely worth the more difficult terrain, and you will pass several mines and historical landmarks. Just remember to stay safe and stay out of old mines.
