The Dolores River is
one of the most scenic rivers in North America. The permitted sections that we
run are located about one and one half hours from Durango towards Mesa Verde
National Park. The Dolores flows over two hundred miles Northwest, eventually
joining the Colorado River above Moab, Utah. The Dolores has many Class III+
rapids including the most famous big drop in southwest Colorado,
"Snagletooth Rapid" Class IV+. The Federal Government only permits 18
outfitters in the Nation to run expeditions on the Dolores River. This
permitting system allows the canyon through which the river flows, to remain in
a pristine wilderness condition. We are proud to be one of the original
outfitters who run trips on this exclusively permitted section of the Dolores
River.
The trip begins above Ponderosa Gorge characterized by mature stands of ancient Ponderosa and Fir trees. The banks of the river are highlighted by towering red sandstone walls which often reach clear to the rivers edge. Through the trip you can see evidence of the ancient Anasazi ruins, petroglyphs, herds of big horn sheep, deer, elk, and many other varieties of wildlife. Adventuring on, the canyon becomes narrow and the vegetation is more predominantly pinyon, juniper, yucca and cactus. Beautiful campsites line the banks of the river. With our great chef, friendly guides, camping equipment and dutch oven delights, we offer you a wilderness experience with all the comforts of home. The Dolores river is a perfect trip for the entire family as well as the seasoned adventurer. Its not just a trip its an expedition...
